    Teaching Approach

Hej! I am a native Swede who offers Swedish lessons and Swedish language tuition. I have taught over 2,500 hours since 2005. Every aspect of the Swedish language can be covered, from basic beginners to advanced business/academic. I believe that language is the key to understanding a country and its people. As I was born in Sweden and lived there until the age of 25 (2003), I will be happy to also (if you wish) introduce you to the culture and traditions of Sweden while teaching you Swedish.

    Program Description

I can cater for all levels, from beginner to advanced (A1-C1). I will focus on speaking and conversations, reading and comprehension abilities, and I will use many different forms of media (including for example videos, books, podcasts, newspapers, magazines, cartoon strips and so on) in order to create an exciting learning environment. I believe in an interactional approach where the learner and the teacher specify aims and goals together and also review these during the process of the course.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    * How much does a lesson cost?
Day lessons (until 6 pm UK time): £25 (appr $40/€32/260 kr) per hour.
Evening lessons (after 6 pm UK time): £30 (appr $47/€38/315kr) per hour.

I accept payment to UK bank account, Swedish bank account and Paypal. Payment must be made before the lesson. 24 hour cancellation policy applies. Contact me for payment details.

    * What is your teaching schedule?
    Contact me for more details.

    * How long will it take before I can speak decent Swedish?
It is really hard to say how long it will take for someone to make a certain progress, as there are a number of factors that come in to play. Some of them are individual learning pace in general, previous knowledge of grammar (those with much knowledge tends to progress faster), how much homework the learner is able to do between lessons (faster if more homework), and also if the learner has any particular areas that they find challenging. The course books that I work with for beginners, covers levels A1, A2, B1 and B2 (CEFR-levels). Cambridge ESOL has said that each level is reached with the following guided learning hours:

    A1: 80-120
    A2: 180-200
    B1: 350-400
    B2: 500-600
More hours per week = faster progress.

    * Are you a native speaker?
Yes, I was born in Sweden and have lived there all my life until 2003.

    * What is your teaching experience?
I have taught over 2,500 hours of Swedish since 2005 to adult learners in Europe, Asia and US. Apart from teaching Swedish, I have also been engaged in educational activities in a number of different areas involving a variety of learners; from teenagers at the Swedish Family Planning Organization to mature learners in business environments in UK and Sweden. I have a PostGraduate Certificate in Higher Education (Master level) at Sheffield University and I have been teaching at different universities. I am extremely patient and my vast teaching experience has made me sensitive to individual differences among learners.

    * Have you done any teacher training?
Yes. I have a PhD in Music/Psychology, University of Sheffield (2010) which involved teaching at university level. I also have a pure teaching degree – a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from University of Sheffield (2007). In addition to this, my undergraduate degree (BA (Hons) at University of Stockholm, Sweden, 2003) included educational studies.

    * What is your teaching approach?
To assess, plan, design and review the progress together with the learner and for the learner to take an active part in their learning. To embrace technology and different forms of media and not restrict learning to ‘copy/paste sentences’. To introduce pieces of Swedish culture embedded in the lessons.

    * This looks interesting, but I feel uncomfortable about learning Swedish via Skype/online.
It is common for those not used to Skype or online communication to feel this way. But this kind of learning has many benefits, and you will save both time and money because you don't need to travel for your lessons.

I am looking forward to hear from you!

Many thanks - Med vänliga hälsningar
