    Program Description

The lessons structures used will vary depending on the need and ability of the student. The aim is to adapt the lessons to meet each student's needs and learning style thereby creating a more expedition learning process. The initial lesson(s) with a new student is primarily conversational (unless the lessons sought are on reading and writing) and these lessons are used to gauge current language skills, learning style and needs. This initial assessment informs future lessons plans and structural approach. The lesson provided range from those designed for novice/non-speaker to experienced/advanced.

Novice student with little or no Amharic language skills begin their language training by first learning “Amharic for Travelers.” This consists of basic lessons on greetings, asking directions, and key pronouns, nouns and verbs of daily use for rudimentary communication. The focus is not proficiency but rater building foundation upon which more complex skill can be built.
In "Beginners Amharic" students start learning more about basic grammar and sentence structure and work on building their understanding of verb conjugation, vocabulary building and working towards proficiency. This is also a time to start learning the Amharic script, Fidel. Transliteration of Amharic words into the Latin alphabet tends to create obstacles for the learning process and learning the fidel as early as possible help reduce obstacles in the learning process.

For more advanced/intermediate students - those who already have rudimentary Amharic skills -- the lessons focus on learning and mastering the Amharic script t and more in-depth study of the more complex grammar and sentence structures and advancement into language proficiency.

Regardless of language skill, those wishing to learn to read and write Amharic are introduced to the script as early as possible which begins with memorizing the fidel (the Amharic script). The lessons for Amharic reading and writing are based on the classroom styles used to teach 1st and 2nd grade native speakers learn the script but adapted to build vocabulary and grammar skills for non-native Amharic learners.

Amharic is not an easy language to learn, especially for those who are only familiar with the Indo-European languages; slightly less difficult for speakers of Semitic languages such a Greek, Armenian etc. For English speakers Amharic requires learning the most foreign words, new grammar and tonality. Regardless of previous language experience, learning Amharic properly will require time and dedication. There are no easy short cuts to learning Amharic; without sustained effort and dedication the language will be practically impenetrable.
