    Teaching Approach

I hope the learning process will be an enjoyable and memorable experience with a structure that is flexible, not rigid. The main aim is to teach speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while also gaining an appreciation of the history of the language and literature. We will weave the various threads into the fabric as we go along so, for example, rather than teach grammar as a standalone aspect, it will be absorbed gradually as we build words into phrases and sentences.

    Program Description

Because Gaelic spellings differ greatly from English or other languages, emphasis will be on the oral and aural skills first, with reading, writing and grammar coming later. We will normally focus primarily on pronunciation in the Connemara/Connacht dialect as there is a difference between it and the other two regional dialects.

    Teaching Experience

I have taught Irish/Gaelic to adults over a thirty year period as well as speaking it to my children in the home. I speak the language on a daily basis and promote it as chairperson of a Gaelscoil (all Irish, Gaelic school)and am active in Gaeilge Locha Riach, the language and cultural umbrella body for the East Galway area.
I stay abreast of new developments by undertaking on-going profrssional development courses and recently started my latest course with the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

    Teacher Training

    Honours (Grade B)in Irish/Gaelic, Leaving Certificate 1973
    B. A. in Irish(Gaelic) and History, University College, Galway, 1977

Produced "Anois Teacht an Earraigh", a presentation on the life and works of Anthony Raftery the famous 18th/19th Century blind poet 2013.
Currently working on a compilation of the Heritage of North Galway.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. Do I need to know some Gaelic/Irish already?
    A. Absolutely not, an open mind and a willingness to have a go are all you need. In some of my group classes I have people who studied Gaelic at Primary and Secondary level as well as those who had not studied it at all and the results have been rather interesting!!

    Q. Can lessons be tailored to suit individual needs?
    A. Of course, one size does not fit all, the pace and content must be decided by the learner. For you to achieve a positive outcome, you need to be completely comfortable on these issues. As we progress, I would usually expect the pace to increase.

    Q. Will the lessons be rigidly structured, like they were in school?
    A. No, the essential approach is to get a basic level of conversational ability, adding to this all the time so rules of grammar etc. are absorbed gradually as we progress. It will be very obvious that one form of a word is used in one situation and a slightly different form in another. This is the most effective way of learning any language, effectively the grammatical and other structures become clear as we learn the language rather than learning the structures and then trying to impose these on the language.

    Q. What if I forget most of what I've learned?
    A. I will always email a summary of the lesson content, words, phrases etc., with phonetic spelling of any words the learner has had particular difficulty with. This will allow the learner to practice between lessons, increasing fluency and confidence.
